With Detroit having its fair share of creepy abandoned funeral homes, it might not come as a complete surprise to people that there’s also an abandoned crematorium. And this particular crematorium, was at the center of controversy for the past couple of years, mainly due to the owners disgraceful and rather shady past. First off for those that may not know; a crematorium is where a deceased body would go to be cremated or in other words, the body is then set on fire and the high temperature heat gradually consumes the body.
The remains are then reduced to ashes and bone fragments, which are then usually transferred into a decorative urn and given to the families and loved ones for keepsake. Anyway, the crematorium was permanently closed in 2021 after the business was exposed by state investigators and then subsequently raided by state police.
The crematorium was owned and operated by a well known notorious funeral director, who at this point in time, must have certainly be used to trouble and scandal as he was also the former owner of the a now infamous shuttered funeral home in the area that was closed for having decomposing bodies with maggots in the garage along with several bloody caskets.
So it was 2021, only a few years after all of this mess, that he found himself again in hot water after his latest business venture, a cremation service company was suddenly raided by state police. Obviously state authorities knew of the controversial funeral home owner and were aware that he also had a history of licensing problems, however, there were 2 main reason for the raid: 1) previously the owner had all of his funeral privileges revoked and because of such actions, he was not eligible or allowed to hold a controlling interest in any funeral business, cemetery, and/or crematory. Records show that he had purchased the crematorium in early 2020 despite having no licensure to operate such a business. And then 2) state authorities claimed that he was “improperly storing and disposing of bodies at the crematorium” despite the owner denying these allegations against him.
Just weeks after the raid, state authorities announced that they had removed all of the bodies from the now shuttered crematorium, however upon our exploration we were in complete shock and disbelief as we soon found out otherwise… As of 2023, the crematorium has since been mostly cleaned out as the owner continues to fight in effort to clear his now scared name and overcome any potential criminal charges.
